Epidemiological Characteristics of COVID-19 and Effective Preparation for the Second Outbreak

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to describe the epidemiological characteristics of the COVID-19 and provide the effective preventive measures for the second outbreak of the COVID-19 in Korea. The COVID-19 was originated at Wuhan, China but rapidly spread to other countries, which made the World Health Organization declare COVID-19 as pandemic status at 11 March, 2020. The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed at 20 January, 2020 in Korea. The number of confirmed cases increased slowly in the beginning, but epidemic outbreak was occurred at Daegu metropolitan city and Gyeongsangbuk-do from 16 Feb 2020 after worship at a big concentrated church. Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention has tried very hard to control for the epidemic including classical preventive measure against epidemics such as actively identifying and treating the infected cases and quarantine their contact persons. The healthcare professionals showed their endless dedication for caring the COVID-19 patients. The Korean citizens accepted and practiced the government¡¯s anti-epidemic policy very actively. According to these harmonious collaboration, the epidemic seemed to be controlled rapidly. However, there has been continuous sporadic outbreaks at community level as well as incomers from overseas. This article describes the experience of Korean government, healthcare professionals, and citizens against COVID-19 epidemic and effective measures for preventing the second outbreak of the COVID-19 in Korea, which includes developing safe and effective vaccines and therapeutics, establishing effective governance and risk communication system, and constructing
platform for conducting productive researches.
